This weekend, Sam and I celebrated our first anniversary of dating. And while I’ll address that more later this week, I’m too impatient to wait to share what we did today. Sam told me he had an all-day surprise planned and that I should dress comfortably. I was puzzled to say the least.
But one Starbucks latte, one gas stop, and four hours later, we arrived in what appeared like a industrial center. We pulled up to a driveway full of warehouses and I was still so confused. I figured maybe we were going to do something touristy, something outdoorsy, or even something involving booze. I had no idea that Sam would surprise me with a day of shopping.
He drove us to Lynchburg, Virigina to visit the J. Crew Clearance and Distribution Center. Seriously, I was so happy and surprised! I’ve mentioned the place to him before, but Sam is your typical “dude” and never thought he’d give up his whole Sunday to take me shopping. From what I’ve read online before, J. Crew likes to keep this place on the down-low and you can’t even find the locations on the J. Crew website. However, these clearance centers are still well-known for their seasonal sales where shoppers line up at 6 am to score trash bags worth of clothing.
To get to the point, this building/warehouse was amazing. The store was no bigger than your normal J. Crew, if not smaller. However, it was crammed full with cashmere, scarves, jewelry ($15- $25), shoes, jeans, dresses, blouses, and lots of swim wear. I tried on more pieces of clothing than I could have afforded. I was in heaven.
In the end, I scored this metallic gold sweater for $30 (now selling for $98 online!), this white silk blouse for $30 (worth $98), and this J. Crew Factory bright orange skirt for $30. Important to note – if you can, bring your student ID from college days. I still had mine stuck in my wallet and scored another 15% off with the student discount!
Sam was happy to also get a cute striped top for only $15, but had a lot less to pick from in terms of the men’s clothing selection.
Another cool idea: grab directions from the cashier and drive two miles down the road to a second J. Crew Clearance Center where they also carry a ton of Madewell on sale! How lucky is Lynchburg? TWO J. Crew clearances in one tiny town? They must dress fabulously.
At the second J. Crew Clearance Center I was disappointed with the lack of variety of sizing (ahem – not everyone is a size zero unfortunately), but was super excited to get these amazing gold stud earrings for only $10. Factor in my 15% student discount, and they were a great deal.
If you’re near Lynchburg anytime soon, or just driving through, definitely take some time to stop by the J. Crew Clearance Stores! I’d love to plan a day trip out to wine country again and stop by the stores.
